2 teens arrested after overnight car burglaries and chase in Teaneck neighborhood
An 18-year-old Englewood man and a 17-year-old were arrested in connection with multiple vehicle burglaries and thefts from automobiles in Teaneck, police said.
According to Teaneck police, officers responded to the Cooper Avenue area at about 4:15 a.m. June 21 after a resident reported two masked men dressed in black walking through the neighborhood. Police located two people matching the description near a parked Honda, but both fled on foot when they saw the patrol vehicle.
Police apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile after a brief chase into a wooded area. Officers later found the second suspect, Derise Martinez, 18, of Englewood, hiding in the backyard of a Lorraine Avenue residence. He was taken into custody without incident.
Investigators recovered multiple vehicle sensor modules removed from Honda vehicles, along with wallets, ID cards, credit cards, headphones, cash, gloves, masks and an open knife. Police said the sensor modules are used in vehicle safety and driver-assistance systems.
Martinez was charged with employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime, four counts of theft, burglary, 11 counts of receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, credit card theft, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, obstruction and possession of burglary tools. He was remanded to the Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center.
The juvenile was charged on a delinquency complaint with similar offenses and released to a parent.
