A Newburgh teenager who opened fire on the Newburgh Free Academy South Street
campus earlier this year has been sentenced to state prison, according to Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.
Kevin Gaspar, 19, was sentenced last Thursday to nine years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision after previously pleading guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. Prosecutors say Gaspar admitted to illegally possessing a loaded firearm during the shooting.
The charges stem from a Jan. 14, 2025 incident in which a group of teens confronted Gaspar on school grounds. Authorities say the fight broke up, but Gaspar ran toward the group and fired multiple shots, narrowly missing several people. No one was struck.
Police later recovered the gun in two pieces hidden in leaves and brush near the campus.
The case was investigated by the region’s Non-Fatal Shooting Taskforce, which includes the City of Newburgh Police Department, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and analysts from the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center. The taskforce is funded through New York state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative and focuses on solving gun crimes even when victims or witnesses are uncooperative.
Hoovler praised the team’s work, saying the incident reflects ongoing challenges with street-level gun violence.
“Brazen gunplay in our communities is unacceptable, and we must employ all resources available to identify and prosecute the perpetrators responsible,” Hoovler said."
The frightening scene was caught on camera, but no one was hit.
