An 11-year-old girl was killed, and an 11-year-old boy was injured after the dirt bike they were riding went through a stop sign and crashed into a pickup truck in Berkeley Township on Wednesday.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said the crash happened in the area of Moorage and Sherman avenues at about 12:45 p.m. The prosecutor said an initial investigation showed that the electric dirt bike, driven by the 11-year-old boy, was traveling northbound on Sherman Avenue “when it failed to stop at a posted stop sign” at the intersection.
“The electric dirt bike entered the intersection and struck the driver’s side door of a Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling westbound on Moorage Avenue,” Billhimer said in a statement.
The female passenger was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she died from her injuries. The driver of the dirt bike was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for his injuries and later released. The prosecutor said the pickup truck driver remained at the scene and did not show any signs of impairment.
The crash remains under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, local police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office.
