One person was injured after a fire tore through buildings late Sunday night in Ocean Hill, forcing families out of their homes and leaving visible damage behind.
Fire crews rushed to 670–672 Decatur St., between Saratoga Avenue and Thomas S. Boyland Street, just before 11 p.m. after reports of a fire in the upper part of the buildings.
More than 100 fire and EMS workers responded to the scene.
Officials say one civilian was taken to Interfaith Hospital with moderate injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The fire was brought under control around 12:30 a.m., according to officials.
By Monday, windows at 670 Decatur St. were boarded up, workers were on the roof, and a full vacate order was posted on the building — meaning everyone inside had to leave.
Next door at 672 Decatur St., a partial work stop order for electrical work was also posted.
The American Red Cross says it is now helping two households including seven adults and three children. They are receiving emergency assistance, temporary lodging and financial aid.
Neighbors say they saw heavy smoke pouring from the buildings as firefighters worked to knock down the flames.
Some residents believe the fire started at 670 Decatur and spread next door, but fire officials say that has not been confirmed.
Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze.
