Connecticut's Nonprofit Security Grant Program is getting $5 million in state funding, Gov. Ned Lamont announced Tuesday.

The program aims to protect organizations at a heightened risk of hate crimes or violent acts.

Lamont says lawmakers are looking to help faith-based organizations and houses of worship after recent attacks.

The money is coming from the State Bond Commission.

Eligible organizations can qualify for up to $50,000 to increase on-site security measures.

"You come after one of us, you come after a house of worship, you come after any group because of how they believe or how they practice their faith – you're coming after all of us,” said Lamont. “We're looking out for each other. We're standing up for each other. This bill, this grant, this security grant, is one more step to saying 'We believe in you and believe that you belong here in the state of Connecticut.'"

Nonprofits can apply for grants when the next funding round opens in July.
