WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
A winter storm will impact the Hudson Valley through the day today with snow, a wintry mix and rain. No matter where you are in the region, there will be sloppy and slick travel conditions, especially for overpasses, exit/entrance ramps, side streets and hilly areas. Please take caution if you are in need to be out and about today. The snow will be moving in from Central New York and Central Pennsylvania, heading towards the Hudson River, through the morning rush. After about 9 AM, everyone will be seeing shower activity with the bulk of the region seeing snow. The exception will be across southern sections of Westchester County. From 9 AM until the 2-3 PM hour is when the bulk of the shower activity will be falling. Expect snow and rainfall rates to come down quickly enough to briefly reduce visibility and create slick road conditions rather quickly. After 2-3 PM, the system will be moving away from the Hudson Valley, with a gradual reduction in shower activity across Orange and Ulster Counties first, then by 5-6 PM, by Westchester County. The showers will fade away after that as the system moves into New England.
Once the system leaves our region, it is a good idea (if you can) to clear/remove snow from your vicinity, such as on your car top, walkway/stairway, etc. That is because temperatures will start to get chilly as winds pick up overnight. This will lead to freezing concerns and we may have patches of black ice on surfaces from any melted snow or lingering moisture. It would be a good idea to put down de-icing material to prevent icing to occur. Removing any snow you can will help you a lot on Wednesday. As by that time, the snow will be denser and harder to lift/remove.
Higher snow totals will be found in the Catskills, with a range of 6"+ coming down, especially for some of the higher elevations. From the Catskills to Rockland and Putnam Counties, we can expect about 1-6" of slushy snow. And for Westchester County, expect mainly rain with a minor snow accumulation, at best, coming down.
Once the system pulls away, drier conditions move in for Wednesday and Thursday. Expect breezy to windy conditions for Thursday, where the winds will make the temps feel frigid. Friday will be dry with less winds ahead of another system for Saturday.
