The rain has impacted Memorial Day weekend plans. Events were cancelled across the island or brought indoors when possible.
In Freeport along the Nautical Mile, Mayor Robert Kennedy says they’re doing their parade inside and had to cancel their barbecue.
“The Nautical Mile would be packed on this weekend. It's not now,” Kennedy said. “Not to mention all of the fire department and the DPW employees and the police department that were scheduled to work today and tomorrow. They all have to take off.”
Jones Beach hosted their reenactment inside for any visitors, but the beach itself remained empty.
“It was a good time to get out of the house and come here and see this,” said Jordan Brady.
“It's better than sitting at home doing nothing,” said Oskar Puk.
There is some good news in all of this. We’re going to have the longest summer possible. Memorial Day is the earliest it can be, and Labor Day is the latest. That means almost an extra week of summer fun to make up for all the rain.
