The NYPD says officers responded to a 911 call for a fight involving a gun Friday - and that's when they came face-to-face with two people, one of whom pointed a loaded gun at them.
Police said that’s when officers shot that man twice in the leg.
Investigators said it all unfolded shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday at the Stevenson Commons near Lafeyette and Underhill avenues in Soundview.
“In the rear of the location, there’s a sliding gate, a mechanical gate for cars,” said John Chell, NYPD chief of patrol. “The perpetrators come in the gate. Our officers are coming right at them.”
Chell said the two people in question were about 20 feet away from the NYPD car, when one of them pulled a loaded 9 mm gun.
“The perpetrator sees the [NYPD] car,” Chell said. “He takes a shooting stance, takes his gun out of his waist. Our officers defend themselves.”
Investigators said the man was taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.
As of Friday night, police have not released the gunman’s name, but they say he has a criminal background, including a gun arrest in September.
“We have someone walking around the community of the Bronx, in the Soundview section, with a loaded semiautomatic weapon; who was arrested three months ago on the streets of Manhattan and indicted,” Chell said. “This probably shouldn’t have happened.”
The NYPD said they recovered both the loaded gun and a knife on scene.
As of Friday night, police are still searching for the second person.
Anyone with information is urged to call police.
