An Israeli flag hanging outside of Temple Sinai in Tenafly was intentionally burned by someone.
Police are now searching through nearby surveillance cameras to find out who is responsible.
The flag, which was found Tuesday morning with holes burned into it, had been posted outside of the temple on Engle Street alongside an American flag and Pride flag.
Tenafly happens to be the hometown of Edan Alexander, a former hostage, who was recently released by Hamas.
A total of 48 Israelis are still being held hostage by Hamas as Israel continues a planned attack on Gaza.
A week ago, Israel warned all who live in Gaza to evacuate.
News 12 spoke with the executive director of the Temple Sinai about the vandalism.
“I’m angry I’m sad I’m disappointed but unfortunately this is what our world is it’s hard that it’s literally now on our property,” said Jocelyn Inglis. “Our families are concerned, they’re worried but we’re also really proud. Proud of Jews and really proud of Israel.”
The temple already had security in place patrolling the grounds before the incident.
The school and regular activities are going forward without delay or cancellations.
On Monday, before the start of Rosh Hashana, a new Israeli flag will replace the one that was destroyed.
