Three firefighters were injured while working to get a house fire in North Bellmore under control yesterday evening.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal's office said one firefighter was taken to Nassau University Medical Center with minor injuries after falling through a hole in the first floor, a second firefighter was treated at the scene after partially falling through that same hole and a third was treated for an ankle injury.
A pair of dogs also died, according to fire officials.
The fire happened at 800 Sacco Pl. around 6:15 p.m. Monday. Nassau County police said there was heavy smoke and flames in the home when they arrived.
The fire began in the basement of the two-story, split-level home, officials said.
Roughly 100 firefighters from the Bellmore, East Meadow, Uniondale, Seaford, Merrick and Wantagh fire departments got the fire under control in an hour.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal and Nassau County police arson/bomb squad are investigating the cause of the fire, which officials initially believe was caused by a dryer.
The Red Cross is assisting the family of two adults and five children.
